Very few people know how prevalent dog allergies are, and that they can be life threatening. Since they are difficult to treat medically, social awareness is the most powerful tool available for keeping people safe.
The purpose of this website is to create public awareness about how severe the physical dangers of dog allergies are, how expansive the social implications are, and how both of these factors negatively affect the long-term physical and mental health states of those who suffer from dog allergies.
The stories we have heard are deeply troubling.
For those who are allergic
This website is a place for those who are allergic to dogs to access information they can share with others, to help promote understanding. Being allergic is not a choice, and it remains difficult to explain to others. Dog owners often do not understand why allergy sufferers do not welcome the affection of their dogs. As a result, allergy sufferers are stigmatized, which adds to the stress of their physical ailment
Some of the people involved in the creation of this website are also dog owners. We hope that this site helps us to all be more respectful of shared spaces. The best thing we can do is have tools for making responsible decisions about where we bring our dogs, hopefully thinking twice about taking them into spaces that are shared when it is not absolutely necessary. None of us want to take away the rights of a human being to participate in the freedoms the rest of us enjoy. (And our dogs wouldn’t want that either!)
Whether or not you own a dog, please consider being an ally, and spreading the word to someone you know so that we can all make informed decisions that will help create safer public spaces.
